What does Megan read?

Sandra recently told Diane, my¬†sister-in-law, about Megan’s reading habits:¬†

Megan loves all sorts of books, really. She is even getting into recorded books. It started with her Teddy Ruxpin, a gift from one of her “fairy grandmothers” (takes some explaining for that one) a couple years ago. Then we got a Disney book with 4 stories in the book and a CD that read the four stories. Then Grant found two more Disney CDs with similar setups and accompanying books. THEN (aren’t you sorry you asked now?) Wendy’s started giving out CDs with children’s stories (Dolphins at Daybreak and Pirates at Noon, two in a series), unfortunately without the accompanying books. She often listens to her stories while in her room for quiet time/ nap time and at bedtime. She’s even been known to put herself in her room for story time during the day.

That being said, she still loves other books. We’ve checked out the Olivia books from the library (by Ian Falconer), and we all get a kick out of those, but she doesn’t yet own any. She and Michael both enjoy the lift the flap books, but she’s getting to where she wants the longer stories to be read to her. She enjoys the Llama, Llama books (we have Lllama Llama Mad at Mama and Llama Llama Red Pajama) and we’re working more on having her recognize her letters, numbers, and short words. She’s pretty good at that. She loves books with a repeating or rhyming structure in books that allows for more interaction on her part; she takes great joy in participating in the reading. The Kipper books were great for the beginning of this more recent stage! She loves princesses (we even have Do Princesses wear hiking boots?), tells everyone about her 5 horses, is getting into dance and gymnastics, and is obsessed with (and excited about) the idea of going to school , which doesn’t seem to be in her immediate future. She loves music and really enjoys her pretend world. I think she sometimes even makes Grant read recipes to her.

By the way, it is a true. She does have me read her recipes from the “Cooking for Babies” cookbook we have. She loves the personified vegetable and fruit pictures that go with some the recipes. I read them with lots of excitement in my voice.
